A Citation was presented to THE MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS FOUNDATION Friday, April 12, 2002 in Los Angeles, California by Elana Eash Shannon, Chair of Citations/Awards of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. This special Citation was presented to the Board of Directors of THE MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS FOUNDATION which meets twice a year. The citation reads: "In recognition of outstanding contributions to promote instrumental music education nationwide by partnering and connecting with businesses, schools, and communities to provide new refurbished musical instruments to qualified schools and individual students. This achievement has provided important goals for the advancement of music education in the lives of young music students everywhere."
The purpose of THE MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS FOUNDATION promotes instrumental music education nationwide by partnering with businesses, schools, and communities to provide new and refurbished musical instruments to qualified schools and individual students.
MHOF was inspired by the acclaimed motion picture "Mr. Holland's Opus", the story of the profound effect a motivated and dedicated music teacher had on his students. The film's composer, Michael Kamen, founded MHOF in 1996 as his commitment to the future of music education.
MHOF began because across the nation, school and community music programs have been discontinued or severely diminished due to budget cuts. The positive effects of music education on children's emotional and intellectual growth have been proven. MHOF sees the importance of music in the lives of all children, and seeks to keep music alive in the schools.
The MHOF works through a process of application and review, programs are selected based on specific criteria. They make repairs to damaged instruments, distribute refurbished instruments and then purchase new instruments.
Their "Melody Program" targets qualified school music programs and the "Special Projects Program" targets community schools of the arts, hospitals, music therapy, after school music programs and youth orchestras.

The Foundation is a non-profit initiative with two primary missions: To restore music education programs in America's public schools; and to raise awareness of the positive impact music participation has on students. It purchases new musical instruments to restore music education programs that had been cut due to budget reductions in the past or to save programs at risk of elimination due to lack of instrument drives and fundraising events.
VH1 Save the Music Foundation is committed to restoring music education programs for one million children in the next ten years. See www.vh1.com/insidevh1/savethemus/ for additional information on VH1 Save the Music Foundation. (7/01)
Since the beginning of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, the Executive Office has always been in the home of the Executive Secretary. The office has been in a basement, den and other rooms of a home and now is in the spare bedroom of the present Executive Secretary, Julie Hensley. At Conference 2000 in Athens, Ga. this year, Ann Jones, International President, presented a new project on behalf of the Board of Directors. The Conference delegates and members in attendance pledged to support an Executive Office outside of the Executive Secretary's home for the first time in the history of Delta Omicron. The Executive Secretary's position has always been part-time with added volunteer hours. The help of the membership is needed to give the financial support to this important cause in the life of the Fraternity. As of now, storage materials of Delta Omicron are in three different homes. Other professional music fraternities have separate offices to conduct fraternity business and this is needed for Delta Omicron as well. All donations received will go toward the rental of the office space and gifts will be acknowledged.
