2009 Triennial Composition Competition Winner Announced

The winning composition of the 2009 Triennial Composition Competition is Dedica, a composition for cello and piano. Italian-born Michele Negro is the composer of Dedica. Born in 1970 in Treviso, Italy, Mr. Negro received his Diploma of Composition at the Conservatory of Milano. He has continued his study of composition at the Darmstadt School in Germany, the Accademia Chigiana di Fiesole, and the Scuola di Musica di Siena. He has won the Città di Pavia Composition Competition. Several of his compositions have been published and performed throughout Italy.

Mr. Negro composed and dedicated Dedica to one of his young students who died tragically. The composition presents a dialogue between the cello and the piano using musical fragments. The singing moments of the two solo instruments are intertwined by short moments of ensemble music.

Dedica will be performed at the Première Concert on July 18 at the 2009 Triennial Conference. Cellist Jose Dubon of the Atlantis String Quartet and Delta Omicron Conference Accompanist Suzanne Burg will perform the new composition. The Thor Johnson Memorial Commission of the Delta Omicron Foundation, Inc. also will be performed at the Première Concert.

Special thanks are given to Judith Eidson who supervised the 2009 Competition and to our three national patrons who served as judges for this competition: Composer William Bolcomb, Conductor Kirk Trevor, and Cellist John White. More than 25 compositions were submitted for consideration for the 2009 Competition.
