Delta Omicron Board of Directors 2009-12


INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT Jennifer A. Klafeta, president[at]delta-omicron.org (Prospect Heights, IL) graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music in 1988. Initiated into Sigma Chapter, she served the chapter as Treasurer and President. She was awarded the Senior Honor Pin and Star of DO. After working for Karnes Music Company after graduation, Jennifer went back to graduate school. She received a Master of Business Administration Degree in 1994 from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

She served as Delta Province President from 1991-1996 before being elected WHEEL Editor of Delta Omicron in 1996. She was appointed Treasurer of Delta Omicron in 1999. Jennifer is also the Alumni Area Chair of Illinois.

Jennifer is a member of the Mt. Prospect Community Band, playing flute and piccolo.

NATIONAL FIRST VICE PRESIDENT
Nancy Meyette, nanmey[at]fps.fitz.k12.mi.us (Romeo, MI) was initiated into Delta Iota Chapter at Central Michigan University in 1964. She served as Beta Province President and is an active member of Zeta Alpha. Nancy is employed by Fitzgerald Public Schools in Warren, Michigan and currently teaches K-5 general music. Nancy also taught first grade and has been a school librarian. She is a member of the National Guild for Piano Teachers and the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs.

NATIONAL SECOND VICE PRESIDENT
Mary Chisholm, Mac7737[at]sbcglobal.net (New Baltimore, MI) has been an active member of Delta Omicron for 39 years. She was initiated into Delta Theta Chapter at Wayne State University in 1967. Shortly after graduation, she joined Zeta Alpha Chapter and has held numerous offices within the chapter.

Mary worked with the Disability Determination Program in Michigan and retired after 25 years of service. She is active in her church, heading the funeral luncheon ministry, volunteering in the food pantry, singing in the choir, and serving as a wedding coordinator and on the parish council. Mary was recognized in 2005 for the “Keep the Dream Alive Award” by the Archdiocese of Detroit.

NATIONAL MUSIC ADVISOR
Desiree Baxter, dbaxter212[at]msn.com (New York, NY)holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. She has done additional study at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria and New York University and was apprenticed with Lyric Opera Cleveland. Desirée has performed professionally in musical theatre, revues, operas, concerts and oratorios in the U.S. and Europe. She works as a freelance mezzo-soprano in the New York City metropolitan area and is a member of the professional octet at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Desirée was initiated into Alpha Xi Chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1979 and served as Epsilon Province President from 1999-2009. With pianist Kathy Vail, she premiered “Songs for Emmy” by Jay Anthony Gach, winner of the Delta Omicron Triennial Composition Competition at conference in 2006.

As a Mission and Social Justice Commissioner at the Riverside Church, Desirée is deeply committed to progressive Christian social justice work, especially environmental justice and immigration reform. Her pastimes are ballroom dancing and attending the WNBA’s New York Liberty Games.

EDITOR OF THE WHEEL
Janet Twentey Gross, JTwentey[at]aol.com (Huntingtown, MD) was initiated into Alpha Theta Chapter at Frostburg State University in 1977. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education in 1980. She received her Master of Music Degree in Music Education from West Virginia University in 1982. Janet served as Lambda Province President from 1995 to 2005.

Janet currently teaches elementary instrumental music at two elementary schools in Calvert County, Maryland. She has been teaching for 23 years. She is the Membership Chair for Maryland Music Educators Association and is also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Janet performs in the Southern Maryland area with the Calvert Chamber Players and Kindred Spirits. She is also a choir member at Trinity United Methodist Church in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
