ROTATING GRANTS 2005-2006

The rotating grants of $150 to the following collegiate and alumni chapters in 2005-06 were used in the following ways:

Collegiate Chapters

Mu at Miami University of Ohio – A video monitor was installed backstage in the recital hall to aid the flow of performances during recitals.

Alpha Gamma at Carson-Newman College – The chapter purchased a dozen new CDs for the music library. The CDs feature women composers.

Alpha Epsilon at Converse College – The chapter chose to award the grant to an incoming freshman or transfer student to use toward the purchase of books. Applicants had to write an essay about either women in music or service through music.

Alpha Theta at Frostburg State University – The chapter chose to use the grant to help members of the Phi Mu Alpha chapter that was struggling since losing their chapter house to a fire. The grant money helped replace needed items and strengthened the bonds of musicianship and friendship among all members.

Alpha Chi at Hope College – A donation was made to the music library on campus. The librarian worked with the chapter to see which resources were needed the most. Ideas included videos, books, or recordings on topics such as 20th Century opera, or additional volumes of the Cambridge Series.

Delta Delta at Georgetown College – The chapter decide to benefit the community with their grant money. They helped St. John’s Elementary School start a music program by purchasing instruments for the students to be used in the classroom.

Delta Iota at Central Michigan University – The grant money was donated to the Patricia Nixon Woodwind Scholarship. The scholarship competition is an annual event for students majoring in music who are a rising junior or senior, and the scholarship must be used for the following semester.

Zeta Alpha Alumni Chapter in Detroit, MI – These alumni voted to give their grant money to a nearby newly established music therapy center. Eastern Michigan University Music Therapy Center will provide educational opportunities to students on campus, clinical music therapy services to members in the community, and continuing education programs for music therapy professionals.

Zeta Gamma Alumni Chapter in Cincinnati, Ohio – The chapter gave their grant money to a member who is working toward her Masters Degree at Miami University in Oxford, OH. Becky Wells and her husband have 5-year-old twins who keep her busy, but her desire to return to school made her a “worthy and deserving recipient” of this monetary help.
