Zeta Chi Presents “An Evening of Music” By Betty Dickerson Zeta Chi Chapter Dayton, Ohio |
|
Each year, as a service project, the Delta Omicron Zeta Chi Chapter of Dayton, Ohio, presents a program of music at Friendship Village Retirement Home in Dayton, Ohio. This year on November 15, 2005, members of this chapter presented “An Evening of Music” to a music-loving audience of about 100 people. These members, Phyllis Conrad, contralto, Betty Dikerson, soprano, Melinda Hofstetter, violinist, Christi Wilson, pianist, and Marcie Wood, flutist, played and sang numbers from Mendelssohn to Malotte, some unaccompanied, other accompanied. The program was as varied as the generations and schools from which these five musicians came - the generations from the fifties to the eighties and the schools as follows: Phyllis, a national past president of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music; Betty from Berea College in Kentucky; Melinda, Marcia, and Christi from the University of Miami. Examples of the sixteen numbers performed include flute and violin duets “The Prayer” by Fager and Foster and “Rondo” by Mozart, vocal duets “Evening Song” by Mendelssohn and “Barcarolle” by Offenbach, a lute solo “Simple Gifts” (a Shaker melody), a violin solo “The Lord’s Prayer” by Malotte, and a group singing the hymn “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.” To testify to the professionalism of the five musicians, it is interesting to note that they prevailed valiantly despite difficulties. A week before the program it was necessary to find a new pianist, and, on the performance night which was dark and stormy, one performer became lost in the city and was late to the performance. Needless to say, because the “show must go on,” the other four readjusted the program and started out by performing those numbers that they could. When the “lost” was found, the program proceeded and continued smoothly and beautifully. The audience was aware of the predicament and showed their appreciation of the performance with great applause. |
