The Maurine Buchanan Award Submitted by Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, Alumni Club |
|
Maurine Buchanan was a co-founder of our Alumni Club in 1977 and a very active member for many years. In 2002, our Club decided to celebrate her 96th birthday with a surprise party on June 25. Unfortunately, the day before, she fell and was admitted to a local hospital. In the course of dealing with her injuries and her family, who lived far away and could not help, it was determined that the State of Illinois should assume guardianship, and therefore Maurine lost her home. When we discovered this, the State allowed us to come into her home and assess, clean, clear, and organize her possessions, and hold an estate sale. The profits from that sale went to Maurine and enabled her to lead a fairly independent life while staying at a nursing home. We also sifted through all her family papers and saved a great deal of genealogical material for her. The State gave us a percentage of the profits from the estate sale for our own use. We promptly turned it over to Maurine. Maurine died a few months later. We decided to use those estate sale profits to establish five scholarships of $300 each to be awarded in Maurine’s name over a period of five years to the graduating senior in the DO chapter at Illinois Wesleyan University with the highest grade point average. The first award was given last May to Meghan Guse, a voice major. In the fall of 2005, Meghan entered Roosevelt University in Chicago as a graduate student in voice. |
